The Queens Award for Voluntary Service Logo MBEVOLUNTEERS and the organisations they support will be recognised at an awards ceremony next month.

Organisers of this year’s Wiltshire Voluntary and Community Service Awards promise it will be bigger than last year’s event.

The shortlist for the 2011 awards, hosted by Wiltshire Council and NHS Wiltshire, has been announced ahead of a ceremony on October 4 at the Corn Exchange in Devizes.

West Wiltshire organisations top the list, with the Hope Nature Centre, at Southwick Country Park, going head-to-head with Wiltshire Music Centre, based in Bradford on Avon, for the best social enterprise.

West Wilts Special Needs Activity Scheme has been nominated in the category of best group improving the lives of carers.

Nominations for the organisation with the most inclusive approach include Larkrise Community Farm Barn, at West Ashton, and Hope Nature Centre.

The Reeves Orchard Community Project in Bratton is one of three nominations for the best community initiative.

Wiltshire Council’s cabinet member for communities, John Thomson, said: “The shortlist covers a range of local community projects from across Wiltshire and individuals who do remarkable work.

“Last year was the first time we held these awards and we were overwhelmed by the amount of volunteering work that goes on across the county.

“This year, we have seen even more entries and it has shown once again just how important volunteers are to our local communities.”

The awards are funded by sponsorship from organisations and businesses.

Categories include partnership working, innovation, best community initiative nominated by an area board, most inclusive approach, community leadership and volunteer of the year.

New categories for 2011 include improving lives for carers, social enterprise and young volunteer of the year.

NHS Wiltshire chairman Tony Barron said: “NHS Wiltshire is proud to be involved in recognising the huge contribution which volunteers make to the quality of life in Wiltshire.

“Their work is so often left unsung and these awards are just a small – but significant – way of acknowledging their input.”
